Whales and Dugongs
Keep an eye out for these new Save the Kimberley shirts! Featuring drawings done by my brother Ned of Humpback Whales, Dugongs and a boy in a boat with a little telescope. Here’s a sneak peek fresh from being printed with While You Sleep. I do have a few shirts (email me if interested), otherwise keep an eye out for them at Save the Kimberley events, particularly the upcoming Festival for the Kimberley in Sydney on Friday 8 March, 2013 Martin Place, Sydney CBD!
Into the Forest
“The Green and Gold and Red and Black” for Australia?
OK. Well, not really sure where the place is to put ideas like this out into the world. But I suppose ya got to start somewhere… and around “Australia Day” seems appropriate.
Mid to late last year I had this moment of realisation for a potential new flag for Australia. Now, I still have doubt about the flag; the building on top of the Aboriginal Flag, but I also love it. I love how it could celebrate a new colour palate for the country, a new path from the Red, White and Blue, but still with a strong combination of the old. The Green and Gold – the colours of so many existing uniforms – with Green representing new growth and new leaves (as well as from the Torres Strait flag) and Yellow the sun and the brilliant wattle flower, combined with the Red representing the red earth, the red ochre and a spiritual relation to the land, and Black, representing the Aboriginal People of Australia. I’d love to here people thoughts on the appropriateness of this flag. X Tom

“The Lane”
I painted this mural down the lane near where I grew up as a teenager in Sydney beside the small community garden that has sprung up. Was so good to meet all the lovely people in the neighbourhood contributing to the garden, or simply going for a walk. The experience reminded me of the importance function such simple community-run spaces such as gardens and murals act as for a way for people to meet each other.
The mural is a kind of a flotsam and jetsam of my life… and from my memories playing in the rock pools as a kid down at the beach. And as a memorial to my brother Ned.

Dad’s Home Show
I’ve been up at my Dad’s place recently helping him out for an exhibition he is having at his home in the Northern Tablelands of NSW.
Tony Sevil is having this exhibition at his home by appointment throughout December, and possibly ongoing. If you’re driving up the New England Highway drop in and say hi and see his found object art. His place is just out of Uralla between Tamworth and Armidale, NSW. Check out the Country Art Escapes website for more information.
